Andy Irvine

Andy Irvine spends much of every year touring the world to play his music to the broadest possible audiences. 'My Heart's Tonight in Ireland' is a song about being on the road in Australia and thinking back on the place, the music and the artists who inspire him. He refers back to his days with Sweeney's Men in the 1960s, a period before the spirit of the times and his own curiosity led him East for the first time to the Balkans.

Something about the County Clare always brings out the best in Andy's song writing, as his earlier 'The West Coast of Clare' demonstrated - a song recorded with Planxty which comprised Andy, Donal Lunny, Christy Moore and Liam O'Flynn.

Biography

A chance encounter with the works of Woody Guthrie in the late fifties led Andy Irvine into a musical odyssey that has spanned all aspects of Irish traditional music.

Andy spent his musical apprenticeship travelling with Ramblin' Jack Elliot and Derroll Adams, before forming Sweeney's Men with Joe Dolan and Johnny Moynihan. In 1972 Andy became one of the founder members of the internationally-renowned Planxty.

When Planxty disbanded in 1975, Andy teamed up with Paul Brady, but joined the re-formed Planxty in 1979, recording three more albums. In 1986 he founded Patrick Street with Kevin Burke, Jackie Daly and Gerry O'Beirne - they tour the USA annually. Meanwhile, Andy has pursued his love of Eastern music with 'East Wind', and a solo album Rude Awakening.
