TIM: "I had this piano bit that became the verse, and we started playing through it with Andy White. He added a few lyrics, some great lines - including the title. We thrashed it around at a friend's place near Dun Laoghaire; she has a lovely front room with a piano. After an afternoon honing it, and when Neil started chording the chorus with the three part harmonies, it all came together. We were very excited and rushed to Windmill Lane to play it to Donal, who gave it the thumbs up..."

NEIL: "It wasn't a world record: songs have been written in 30 seconds or 30 minutes, but it was a record for the Finn brothers! We should explain that our mother's name is Mary and it was an hommage, a sort of dedication to her. She was born in Kilmellick, County Limerick, and went to New Zealand at the age of two. We took it from there: it's for Mum, basically."

Biography

Finn grew up in fertile New Zealand. One of his heads took six years to burst through the shoulders. Tim looked on it, saw that it was fair and called it Neil.

The two headed boy moved happily through the peaceful town of Te Awamutu, singing and playing the piano with ease.

He brought joy to his family. None of them ever felt that anything was wrong. Uncle George was forever persuading Finn to sing for his supper and various friends and priests of Irish descent were amazed to hear the harmonies issuing forth.

Finn's future seemed assured. A twist of nature had guaranteed him a place in Showbiz history. Finn senior decided he wanted to move north. Finn junior felt it was too soon.

Short of surgical intervention it appeared that the two heads were worse than one. Finn junior agreed to lay low for a while, allowing Finn senior to infiltrate the art elite of Auckland and form a group called Split Enz.

The band cut a swathe through seventies' Australasia, sounding and looking like no one else. European and American tours soon followed, but Finn senior felt something was missing. He turned to the dormant lump on his shoulder one day and with a tap on its freckled skull, reactivated the gruesome assemblage. Finn junior made up for lost time with a flurry of hits that catapulted Split Enz to fame and fortune.
